Wiltons Decorating Course: Part I

Hey Guys! So I just completed the first Wiltons Cake Decorating Course. There are a total of four courses and I'm just about to start the second one in a couple of days! I thought I'd share my thoughts on how effective and how much I enjoyed course 1!

Wiltons Course 1 Cake

I have to admit, I was quite nervous before walking into the first class, especially since I'd heard that it was slightly older people than myself who usually signed up but I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly everybody was. Everybody was pretty quiet the first class but by the next one everybody had warmed up! In terms of the class content, the first class was definitely an introductory class where we were taught some baking tips and the proper way to prepare buttercream icing and how to fill up piping bags. We didn't actually learn many proper decorating techniques besides how to pipe individual stars.

During the second class we were given a mini cake and learnt how to smoothly apply a layer of buttercream in the middle and all around. After that we were shown how to apply a cupcake decoration on top using a few different piping techniques.

The third and last class were used towards working towards a final cake (shown above). These were the classes where we learned how to make some simple buttercream borders and some basic flowers such as the ribbon rose - which is my personal favourite. We also learned how to make little embellishments like leaves.

Overall I really enjoyed the experience and am continuing to course 2 before I have to return back to London for school! I learnt a lot of really great tips for how to properly use buttercream but I do want to gain more experience in making more flowers which is a very prominent focus for course 2!

If you have any questions about this course, feel free to ask in the comments!
