Baking on a Budget

Hey guys! So today I thought I’d write about something that I personally have to deal with constantly. Baking is definitely a huge passion of mine but it can also be a very expensive one. I thought I’d share some tips about how I manage to keep baking and trying out new techniques without breaking the bank!

I think that the most important thing is to keep the recipes simple! Basic ingredients and an uncomplicated presentation can be as effective and as tasty as a ‘fancy’ dessert! One of my all time favourite desserts is shortbread with sugar cookie frosting, which uses a total of 6 or 7 ingredients! That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t create some ‘wow’ desserts for a special occasion, but in the end it all comes down to taste!

When coming across a recipe that looks amazing, look at the ingredient before deciding on anything! If there are some really expensive ingredients needed, think before you make a decision. Are you even going to use those ingredients again? Or are they just going to sit in your kitchen cabinet? Although it can be difficult to pass on a recipe you really want to try (I’ve caved a few times when I couldn’t resist!), just try to consider if you can justify buying all the ingredients!

When buying basic baking ingredients, be aware of where you’re buying from. Although the price differences of flour, sugar, eggs and other baking staples are small, because I often buy these ingredients, in the long run you can end up saving a lot if you know where to get the best deal. I personally buy a lot of my baking staples from Ocado, which is cheaper than supermarkets like Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s in the UK.
Finally, my last tip is to be creative! I think that some of the best and most original ideas are invented when you just go into your kitchen, see what you have and then go from there! I personally love doing this from time to time and came up with these cornflake chocolate cups one day, which have now become a regular occurrence when friends are over! I hope you’ve found all of these tips helpful!
